Drug Discovery from Indian Traditional Medicines.
Experience
Prof. (Dr.) Subhash C. Mandal, currently working as Professor (since 2010) in the Division of Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology of Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, is one of the leading Pharmacognosy researchers in India and World.
Prof. Mandal completed all his Pharmacy education, starting from B.Pharm. to Ph.D., from Jadavpur University and is serving the University as a permanent faculty since 1997.
Prof. Mandal has played a pivotal role in globalization of research in Indian traditional medicine with special emphasis to scientific exploration of medicinal plants in rural Bengal for the treatment of lifestyle and metabolic diseases. He has been working in the area of drug discovery from the traditional medicine through an integrated holistic approach for more than 25 years which has fetched him prestigious recognitions from different national and international organizations. He has also been recognized with the Distinguished Education and Research Award from prestigious American Association for Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAiPS) at Los Angeles, USA in 2009.
Prof. Mandal has been awarded Research Award from University Grant Commission, New Delhi, India.
Prof. Mandal played a key role in inclusion of Pharmacognosy as a Post Graduate subject at different Indian Universities and is striving towards bringing all Pharmacognosy researchers worldwide under a single umbrella.
Prof. Mandal was also awarded prestigious Endeavour Award from Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Australia, for an advanced level research on obesity and diabetes at University of Canberra, Australia in 2009.
Prof. Mandal also awarded SAARC fellowship from University Grants Commission, Bangladesh in 2007, 2011 and Talented Scientist award from University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2011. He was also on deputation at Kings College, London, UK, under Prof. Peter J Houghton, funded by World Bank, Technical Education Quality Improve Programme of Jadavpur University.
Dr. Mandal is also receipts of ShikshaRatna Award (Outstanding University Teacher Award) from Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, Kolkata, India, as a whole Dr. Mandal received 24 awards till date and time. He has completed more than 12 government funded projects in the areas of Indian Traditional Medicines and Drug Discovery.
Prof. Mandal has guided 37 Ph.D. scholars and more than 28 M. Pharm students. The strong research team of Prof. Mandal has explored several new frontiers of combating different diseases with a holistic application of traditional medicine and innovations in botanical extractions which has yielded more than 320 international publications in reputed journals. Prof. Mandal has to his credit 06 patents, two authored and four edited books and several book chapters.
Prof. Mandal is a recognized scientist for different flagship programmes of Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi, India and act as host scientist for different visiting scientists of developing countries. Prof. Mandal has visited 32 countries for different academic, research interactions and exchange programme and have delivered more than 60 lectures and serves on external expert panels for different government regulatory bodies/Universities and Institutes.
Prof. Mandal was deputed as scientist for promoting Indian traditional medicine and drug discovery in Morocco in 2013 by Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, India and Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, Rabat, Morocco.
Recently, Prof. Mandal has engaged with many advanced research work (to be useful for the industry) in developing new innovative, energy efficient extraction methodologies for botanicals which have great export potential.
Through his continuous search for effective green alternatives to synthetic medicine, he believes that, someday somehow, somewhere, someone will find the new phytodrugs from Indian Traditional Medicine (ITM) which will act as a silver bullet for all life-threatening and dreadful diseases in human ailments.
