A Centre for Water Resources Engineering started functioning as an interdisciplinary group in R&D activities in June, 1983 after the appointment of a Professor of Water Resources Engineering. From its formation, the Centre was associated with the Departments of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering and Geological Sciences. It was attached to the Hydraulics and Fluid Engineering specialization of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The Centre was transformed into a School in 1987. It has received recognition from both the UGC, MHRD and AICTE. The School has been offering a “Master of Engineering” course in “Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering” at Post-graduate level sanctioned by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) with an intake capacity of 18 students (Gate :13 , Sponsored : 5) per year.
The Central Board of Irrigation and Power, Govt. of India, in conjunction with the UGC, has awarded two fellowships since 1993 for in-service engineers to pursue higher studies at the School in the field of Water Resources and Hydro Power Engineering, one at the ME and one at the Ph.D. level.
The School has national and international links with different renowned universities and research organizations as regards to collaborative programme.
The School has already carried out a number of consultancy projects with different Government and public organizations in addition to the research projects in the laboratory as well as in the field.
