The School of Mobile computing and Communication has been established in 2006. The school has an objective of promoting study and research activities in various areas of Mobile Computing and Distributed Computing. An AICTE-approved 2-year Post-Graduate Degree Course on Distributed & Mobile Computing is being offered from 2006 academic session. The Current intake is 15. In addition, the School regularly organizes short term courses in Mobile and Distributed Computing.

Mission:

Our mission is to do enabling research on cutting edge technology in Mobile Computing and Communication. This includes the following tasks:
* To create and develop a University-wide, general-purpose, all-pervasive computing and communication environment using wireless mobile access technique as the last hop.
* To develop a University-wide distributed high-performance testbed for collaborative research in IT and emerging technologies in computing and communication.
* To identify, use and develop available hardware devices, sensors & transducers, systems software and components for building cost-effective, context-appropriate mobile and wearable computing & communication systems for deployment in real-life applications.
* To build and deploy disaster management IT systems that can be rapidly set up for quick dissemination of available information and run in cases of emergencies in the face of little available infrastructural support.
* To offer new courses and research programs on emerging technologies in mobile computing and communications at the PG, doctoral and post-doctoral levels utilizing this infrastructure.
* To promote comprehensive and interdisciplinary research in the application of Mobile and Wearable devices / systems in socially relevant programs such as spread of education, alleviation of poverty, providing health care, agricultural support system, etc.
* To foster the growth of collaborative R&D with industry and other institutes – both national and international – in the field of mobile computing and communication for transfer of know-how to industry with appropriate IPR protection and implementation of target-oriented projects for industry and other sectors.
* The biggest infrastructure is the IBM p690 Regatta Server - the largest and fastest of its kind in this part of the world. The server with four separate partitions named after the four illustrious sons of Bengal - Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Dr. Meghnad Saha and Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose - runs on both Unix (IBM AIX) and GNU/Linux. It has 16 PowerPC4+ processors and a total main memory of 32 GB with flexibility of assigning variable amount of resources to the partitions on the fly through the Hardware Monitoring Console.
* Two Memoranda of Understanding have been signed between Jadavpur University and IBM. The first of these is of a general nature while according to the second Jadavpur University is a part of IBM worldwide centre for Advanced Studies program.
* The Centre has set up wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) covering part of the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Tele-Communication Engineering. Similar Wi-Fi LAN has been set up in the Salt Lake Campus of the University linking all the departments.
* A Centre library with approximately 231 titles has been set up for use by all members of cmcc the faculties involved in various project works in the fields of mobile computing and communication.
* A comprehensive laboratory has been set up to perform experiments on various physical layers of mobile communication as part of the central facilities of the Centre for Mobile Computing & Communication.
* An IBM p650 server has been installed in the month of July, 2005 at the Salt Lake campus of the University and is currently operational.

* Awareness program on Wireless and Mobile Computing.
* Workshop on Bluetooth Technology and WAP by HP.
* Awareness program on High Performance Computing using the IBM Regatta Server.
* Two-day seminar and training program on Large Scale NASA Science Application on the Columbia Super Cluster and Parallel Computing conducted by Dr. Rupak Biswas (Deputy Chief, NASA Ames Research Centre).
* Ten-day training program on Red Hat Linux System Administration.
* Formal signing of MOU with IBM - main MOU and CAS MOU.
* Five-day training program on Red Hat Linux Network Services and Security Administration.
* Formal signing of MOU with Hewlett Packard.
* CMCC has successfully organized AMOC 2006 at Hyatt Regency, Kolkata from 4-7 January, 2006.
* One-day course on "Operating System" under retraining of college teachers (UGC) scheme was conducted on March 10, 2006.
* Remote access to the Regatta server through Internet.
* The centre has organized 1st Summer School on Mobile Distributed Computing from 17th to 28th July, 2006, at Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
* A state-of-the-art Mobile Computing Laboratory has been set up as a central facility of CMCC in collaboration with Hewlett Packard.
* CMCC has successfully organized AMOC 2007 at Hyatt Regency, Kolkata from 3-6 January, 2007.
* The Centre and School of Mobile Computing has a new office at Salt Lake campus of Jadavpur University since June, 2007.

Programs In The Immediate Future The following future activities are planned:

* Commissioning of ad-hoc wireless LAN.
* Location-based Web Services using mobile handset as the last hop.
* SSite to site VPN connectivity linking the two campuses.

Research Activities
The activities of the Centre are supported by faculty members of as many as seven departments and schools who are working on 16 projects on various topics related to Mobile Computing & Communication. These works have already given rise to many international and national publications. External organizations such as Indian Statistical Institute, Indian Institute of Management, University of Calcutta, West Bengal University of Technology, Defence Research Labs, ERTL, CDAC, Calcutta Telephones, SAMEER Kolkata and IIT-Kharagpur are also actively contributing to these efforts.
