What we want here is not merely to give you a little information, not merely to open to you careers for earning a livelihood, but to build up sons for the motherland to work and to suffer for her. That is why we started this College and that is the work to which I want you to devote yourselves in future. What has been insufficiently and imperfectly begun by us, it is for you to complete and lead to perfection.

[From the speech by Sri Aurobindo Ghosh delivered on 22 August 1907 before the students and teachers of Bengal National College.]

About Us

The National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 discussed about the fundamental relation between motivation of teacher and the education quality. The NPE documented the need to improve the status of the teacher and proposed to provide opportunity for professional and career development with the expectation that the teachers may fulfill their role and responsibility within the system of higher education. It was proposed to enhance their motivation skills and knowledge through systematic orientation in specific subjects, techniques and methodologies, and thereby inculcate in them the right kind of values that would in turn encourage them to take initiatives for innovative and creative work. Keeping the above objectives in view UGC had proposed to organize orientation programmes in pedagogy, educational psychology, philosophy, socio-economic, political concerns and Information Technology for all newly appointed teachers and librarians at least once in three to five years. There were also scheme to encourage teachers to participate in seminars, symposia, workshops, etc.
To carryout this mission UGC finally launched the concept of Academic Staff Colleges in 1987. Jadavpur University Academic Staff College has stepped forward in February, 2000. Incidentally that was an important phase for the university as well. Since the official recognition in 1955, Jadavpur University had emerged quickly as one of the excellent institutions not only in the field of engineering but also humanities and science faculties. It reached a new summit when UGC credited it as one of the first five universities with "Potential for Excellence". The NAAC has accredited with Five Star Status for the period of 2004-2005. At this point of journey ASC has been initiated as a wing of this glorious institution.
Main Objectives of so founded Academic Staff College are to conduct specially designed Academic Staff Orientation programmes for the newly appointed lectures and Refresher Courses for serving teachers to keep abreast of the latest advances in various subjects, exchange expressions with their peers and learn mutually from each others. Since the establishment of the UGC-ASC coincided with the rise of Jadavpur University to such an exalted position in the Indian academic establishment, it is felt that it has an added responsibility to contribute in its own ways to the vibrancy of the intellectual environment and community life both within the campus, and outside.
