The Jadavpur University Entrepreneurship Cell was founded with the aim of fostering the spirit of entrepreneurship among the new generation. Our focus has been the establishment of an innovative mindset among the University students, which will help create entrepreneurs and thought leaders who shall play a key role in the progress of our nation's economy.

In the years gone by, we have emerged as a platform to guide creative minds through effective interaction between the student body and esteemed members of the corporate world, including successful entrepreneurs, investors, and venture capitalists. This has enabled transformation of innovative ideas into entrepreneurial ventures.

The Entrepreneurship Cell was formed on 20th July, 2016 through a workshop held in the Salt Lake Campus of the Jadavpur University, in the presence of distinguished faculty members and eminent startup community personalities, which included:

  • Prof. Suranjan Das, Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University
  • Prof. Asis Mazumdar, Member Secretary, Business Incubation Centre (MSME), Jadavpur University
  • Mr. Aloke Mookherjea, Former Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (ER)
  • Mr. Ravi Ranjan, Sr. Associate, NASSCOM 10,000 Start-ups

The organisation, through its various Initiatives, intends to bolster the development of India's entrepreneurial ecosystem by establishing eastern India as a hub for startups. Check us out on Facebook. Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn to know more.

Activities of the E-Cell :

Jadavpur University Entrepreneurship Cell helps its members establish themselves in the field of entrepreneurship as well as business consulting by guiding and assisting them at every step, even though they start out with basic or no knowledge in the respective fields. This is facilitated by:

  • Conducting online/offline sessions on topics like Design Thinking, Basics of Data Analytics, Microeconomics, and the like, on a regular basis;
  • Grouping individuals together and organizing case study sessions within the organization and its members, as a part of team-bonding activities, and inculcating the practice of problem-solving;
  • Providing students with an opportunity to attend webinars by eminent industry experts, which are organized by JU E-Cell or other distinguished organizations/institutions.

We help in building and sustaining the startup ecosystem in our University. Hence, JU E-Cell works closely with budding startups and provides them with guidance by helping them connect with industry experts and professors.

Our team activities and events are funneled through our wings, which include:

  • The Finance Wing ventures into the concepts of hardcore finance. Sessions are organized routinely to break down the principles of corporate finance. The nuances of financial markets are explained too, along with the seemingly intimidating jargon.
  • The Consultancy Wing has tasked itself with demystifying businesses, by looking at them as answers to a series of problems. The famed case study approach is explained for the purpose of advanced problem solving.
  • The E-deate Wing elucidates the processes that go behind starting up. Innovating is fun but do you know that there are a series of forms, processes and research which is required before starting up?

We are in the process of adding more wings, which shall address the prospects of solving business problems using data and technology and throw light on the domain of marketing, among various others.

JU E-Cell organizes a number of events over the entire year and such events include startup launch competitions, case challenge competitions, mock IPL auction, virtual stock market trading among others. A number of boot camps are also organized which are open-to-all, usually prior to the grand events, for upskilling students who wish to participate but lack prior knowledge.

We actively share interactive, fact-driven posts on various social media platforms for enlightening the University's youth about entrepreneurial culture.

Highlights :

Over the years, we have become increasingly successful at carving out specific calendar slots for three flagship events, which attract most of our collaborations, innovative ideas and footfall. These are:

  1. Hult Prize On Campus: Hult Prize is the world's largest social entrepreneurship ideation competition, which is organized across institutes in more than 120 countries. The problem statement for the same is announced annually by President Bill Clinton, after which a detailed case challenge is published. The global winner receives $1 million as seed-funding for their idea.
Our varsity saw the first edition of the event in the year 2016. Since then, we have been serving as the main organizing committee for the same. It is generally organized in the month of November, with the signature "infoseminar" series in the days leading to the main event.
The winning teams qualify for Hult Regionals rounds, our teams have represented the university at cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, Ankara, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco, London etc.
Connect to us via our official handles on Facebook and Instagram.

  2. E-Summit: Entrepreneurship Summit is one of the largest entrepreneurship events of eastern India. A wide variety of fixtures are organized, which range from case challenges and design competitions to simulated auctions, simulated stock and cryptocurrency markets, panel discussions by alumni and market personalities and hackathons.
In the leadup to the main event, there are workshops on topics like cryptocurrency, stock market, problem solving etc. Cash prizes and seed-funding opportunities complement the knowledge gained. E-Summit'21, the latest rendition of the event, was the largest one we have organized so far, in terms of registrations (10,000+), prize money (worth over ?5,00,000) and corporate partners (50+)
Participants from colleges across the country are a part of the audience, along with judges of national and international repute. Having witnessed many firsts to its credit, E-Summit has served to set new standards for its participants and organizers. For instance, Kolkata's first-ever overnight (30 hrs) hackathon was conducted in E-Summit 2020.

  3. E-Weekend:Entrepreneurship Weekend, shortened to the aforementioned name, is an event organized exclusively for the freshmen but all years are encouraged to participate. It is considered to be the unofficial introduction for our students, to the world of business competitions, case studies and the like.

Large participation numbers, with attractive prizes for taking, sets the tone for the typical academic year. In its fifth edition, E-Weekend'22 had gown to include four events - Technokraft, Data Binge, Pitchgenix, and Corporate Devs. Students from institutions around Kolkata threw in their names to compete among themselves and learn from seasoned experts, simultaneously. Excitement, curiosity and interest are common among the young innovators welcomed every year.

Adding on to the three flagship events, we also have ones like The Internship Matchmaking Fair (also known as the Career Carnival), which has been received extremely well. Its 2022 edition had 1000+ processed applications and 50+ recruiting partners, which included early-stage and established startups along with large multinational organizations. We are striving to make it an annual fixture for connecting enthusiastic students with corporations.

Other events we have organized include:

  • The Climate Launchpad Bootcamp, a workshop-cum-idea pitching competition
  • Facebook On Campus in association with YKA (Youth ki Awaaz)
  • DAAD Falling Walls Lab, a competition where researchers, economists, scholars and innovators pitch their idea within three minutes
  • VizQuiz, an online two-stage business quiz competition.

Our events regularly feature in Srijan, the annual techno-management fest of the varsity. We have also organized various seminars and discussions on relevant topics. These include, among others, TEDx Jadavpur University, Josh Talks Jadavpur University, workshop on Embedded Systems, Earth Challenge Seminar 2019, in association with FREED, Times Innovation Challenge Panel Discussion, "A Quick Peek into the World of AI", in association with JUAAS, "IT as a career choice during the pandemic", in association with BCC&I, etc. Q&A sessions are highly sought after.

We frequently assist the teams participating in hackathons, business plan competitions and case challenges of national repute. These include the Smart India Hackathon, organized annually by the MHRD Innovation Cell (MIC), Government of India, Climate Launchpad, organized by Climate Collective and numerous other contests, by various IITs and IIMs. Case in points include Team EcoEden, winners of SIH 2020 in the IC470 category and Palok Poriborton, finalists of the prestigious CIJ (Circular Innovation Jam) 2020.

The events enumerated above would not have been possible without the nature of collaborations we have had. These include PwC, KPMG, IBM, Deloitte, Piramal, Berger and various other firms and businesses of international repute. Startups like Social Dukan, Applop, AngelHack, Aunwesha and MindHour have graced us with their assistance too.

Our facilitators from the startup-facilitating ecosystem include NASSCOM, Indian Angel Network, TiE (The IndUS Entrepreneurs) Kolkata, Venture Catalysts, Lead Angels, ah! Ventures, WeWork Labs, CII, BCC&I and IIMCIP. These have been complemented by government bodies like MIC and initiatives like Digital India.
