Counselling
Every department assigns two or more teachers to act as mentors to students who join the university. These mentors provide aid, counselling and assistance to freshers. The Dean of Students and the Director of Youth Welfare are responsible for the well-being of all students of the university. In addition, there is a Counselling Cell which helps students. The Centre for Counselling Services and Studies in Self-Development offers a UGC Three-Years (Certificate / Diploma / Advanced Diploma ) Career Oriented Course on Stress Management and a Certificate Course on Basic Skills on Counselling in Conflict Management. It also developed two documentary films on Depression & Chemical dependency with students on campus in collaboration with the Department of Film Studies, Jadavpur University. Students and faculty members facilitate reducing distress of individuals belonging to different families and organizations. The university has keen interest in developing the Centre to the fullest possible extent. Faculty members are committed to the development of the Centre. It is closely associated with reputed mental health professionals and mental health organizations all over India which greatly helps in improving the kind of research undertaken by the Centre. There is a huge demand for the service provided and the courses run by the Centre. There is also strong need for the kind of research projects undertaken by the Centre.
Student Mentoring and Support
Jadavpur University is one of the few universities in the country to have a full-time Dean of Students and a full-time Director of Youth Welfare, whose responsibilities are largely centered on students and their needs. The Dean of Students looks after the following: health, residential facilities, student union matters, freeships/scholarships, financial assistance and bank loans, and the university's Anti-Ragging Committee. The Director of Youth Welfare is in charge of outreach activities, youth welfare activities, students clubs/societies, students medical insurance. The highest university official charged with assisting students, particularly in matters related to academics is the Joint Registrar (Academic). There is also a creche/day care centre for staff, scholars and students.
Personal Enhancement and Development Schemes
The offices of the Dean of Students and the Director of Youth Welfare are charged with the responsibility of looking after these matters. The Officer of Placement and Training looks after students counselling and career-path identification. Under the UGC's scheme of Remedial Coaching, the university has conducted several development programmes. In addition, there is the Centre for Counselling Services and Studies in Self-Development that provides confidential counselling to students free of charge on matters ranging from addiction to career-choice.
