During its long and glorious history, IMPACT Centre is a result of upgradation from IMPACT Project - SSS .
IMPACT Project - SSS was a pilot project on manpower development in Electronics and Computers, with initial assistance from the World Bank, The Swiss Development Cooperation & Govt. of India, aims at improving the quality of Under-graduate and Diploma level Education to meet the needs of the Industry. It is being implemented in 32 Participating Institutions (PIs) consisting of 14 Engineering Colleges, 12 Polytechnics and 6 CEDTs, during 1991-97. Five premier institutions, Jadavpur University-Calcutta, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore and NEC Bangalore act as Resource Centres (RCs) to the project, providing professional support to the PIs.
The Project Implementation Unit is under Ministry of Communication & Information Technology (MCIT), Govt. of India, previously known as Department of Electronics (DOE), New Delhi. In order to ensure that the gain achieved under Project IMPACT do not wither away, Sustainability Support Scheme (SSS) was launched w.e.f. January 1998 with a unique built-in feature of revenue generation at the SSS PIs. Sustainability Support Scheme has been implemented with the objectives namely to sustain the quality of education and training of engineering undergraduate and diploma students in the fields of Electronics and Computer, to provide up-gradation of knowledge and skills of industry professionals through Continuing Engineering Education Programme and to strengthen the linkage between academic institutions and industry.
To follow these instructions of Department of Electronics (DOE), Project IMPACT developed education training tie-ups with CMC Ltd. (at that time it was a Govt. of India Enterprise), ECIL-ECIT (Education & Training department of Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. of Dept. of Atomic Energy) and M/S Brainware India Pvt. Ltd. to develop and supply industry standard and efficient manpower to the growing need of IT industry.
