Mukherjee’s primary research is on the ‘Indian film industry’; as well, she is involved with database building, archival projects, and research on technological transformations in India.

Mukherjee teaches Ph.D courses, and ‘Indian Cinema: Industry and Popular forms’, ‘Film Language’ courses at the MA level. She also teaches the M.Phil courses at the School of Women’s Studies.

Lately, Mukherjee has researched and published on sound, music and voice in Indian films. Her present study comprises the ‘city, cinemas, urban cultures and the digital context’.

Mukherjee joined St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Calcutta, in December 1998, and headed the MCVP & FS Departments unto January 2007. She joined Jadavpur University in February 2007.
