University Grants Commission had decided to open new Academic Staff Colleges with reasonable financial assistance in five Universities/Institutions, including Jadavpur University, with effect from February 2000. As a result the Academic Staff College of Jadavpur University was established in its new building in Salt Lake Campus, Kolkata. Main Objectives of so founded Academic Staff College are to conduct specially designed Academic Staff Orientation programmes for the newly appointed lectures and Refresher Courses for serving teachers to keep abreast of the latest advances in various subjects, exchange expressions with their peers and learn mutually from each others . Since the establishment of the UGC-ASC coincided with the rise of Jadavpur University to such an exalted position in the Indian academic establishment, it is felt that it has an added responsibility to contribute in its own ways to the vibrancy of the intellectual environment and community life both within the campus, and outside.
Since its inception in 2000, the UGC-ASC, Jadavpur University, has organised eleven (11) Orientation Programmes for college and university teachers, one Orientation Programme for Academic Administrators, and eighty two (82) Refresher Courses in a host of subjects. The content of the orientation courses has been redesigned in keeping with the recent UGC directive to equip college and university teachers in the tools of information technology.

The National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 discussed about the fundamental relation between motivation of teacher and the education quality. The NPE documented the need to improve the status of the teacher and proposed to provide opportunity for professional and career development with the expectation that the teachers may fulfill their role and responsibility within the system of higher education. It was proposed to enhance their motivation skills and knowledge through systematic orientation in specific subjects, techniques and methodologies, and thereby inculcate in them the right kind of values that would in turn encourage them to take initiatives for innovative and creative work. Keeping the above objectives in view UGC had proposed to organize orientation programmes in pedagogy, educational psychology, philosophy, socio-economic, political concerns and Information Technology for all newly appointed teachers and librarians at least once in three to five years. There were also scheme to encourage teachers to participate in seminars, symposia, workshops, etc.
To carryout this mission UGC finally launched the concept of Academic Staff Colleges in 1987. Jadavpur University Academic Staff College has stepped forward in February, 2000. Incidentally that was an important phase for the university as well. Since the official recognition in 1955, Jadavpur University had emerged quickly as one of the excellent institutions not only in the field of engineering but also humanities and science faculties. It reached a new summit when UGC credited it as one of the first five universities with ‘Potential for Excellence’. The NAAC has accredited with Five Star Status for the period of 2004-2005. At this point of journey ASC has been initiated as a wing of this glorious institution.
From the inception to this financial year, 2009-2010, UGC - Academic Staff College, J.U. has already conducted 29 Orientation Programmes, 128 Refresher Courses and one Winter School in Science. Along with it has organized 10 workshops for teachers, librarians and academic administrators / principals.
Apart from its scheduled task it has participated to organize Retraining Programme of college and university teacher and librarians under Potential for excellence Scheme. Two such programmes have been organized by ASC, JU.
ASC is equipped with nearly 2000 books from various disciplines. Library facilities have been provided at the Academic Staff College, with many new books essential for the courses so that the participants may have an easy access. They will have access to the Central Library on the main campus of the university also. The university intends to extend this facility with a view to creating a library-cum-documentation centre. At present more than 8500 on-line journals are available through the digital library.
